Chichen itza is one of the main archaeological sites, vestige of the Mayan Culture. This wonderful and mystical archaeological area was recorded in the list of Mankind´s Patrimony by UNESCO in 1988 and, on July 17, 2007, it was recognized as one of the seven wonders of the modern World.

Ancient capital of the Mayan culture, it is located 75 miles east of the city of Merida. At Chichen Itza you may discover secrets locked up in its most relevant buildings.

Every year, during the Spring equinox, a natural light and shade phenomenon takes place and is projected on the stairs of the great pyramid, which look like the descent of the “feathered serpent”. Other interesting sites are the Ball Court and the Observatory or “Caracol” (sea-shell), called so because of curious circular shape that recreates inside a spiral similar to this mollusk’s shell. The sacred “Cenote” which is a sinkhole from where rings, necklaces and gold and jade objects have been recovered, as well as skeletons of young women who were sacrificed to “Chaac” the god of rain.

In its heyday, it was the most important city at the political, economic and religious levels for the Mayans of the territory currently known as the Yucatan Peninsula. The archaeological area is open to the public and has approximately, 17 buildings and two sinkholes.

If you like history and archaeology don´t miss visiting Chichen Itza and get to know one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
